YOGA RETREAT w/ MICK BARNES

LIMA VALLEY, PORTUGAL

After years of talking, plotting, and promising, Mick Barnes is finally heading to Europe. This is a unique opportunity to practice and be guided by Australian ”teacher of teachers” and an exceptional human being. It is a chance to gather together—to see old friends and meet new faces.

There's not much to say except there is no doubt this week will be incredible. A location that is nothing short of divine, meals that nourish the soul, Mick’s presence and guidance that defies description. Expect epiphanies, laughter, hard work on the mat, and lessons on how to truly enjoy yourself.

Meaningful connections to be forged and so much to be discovered, within and around.

9 - 16 June 2025 — taught by Mick Barnes

Built in the 18th century, our retreat hub for the week is a true gem of timeless elegance. Inside, you'll find exquisite azulejo tiles, grand archways, and meticulously preserved period details that offer a glimpse into Portugal's rich cultural heritage. Outside, lush gardens, tranquil courtyards, a sparkling pool, and hidden corners beckon for moments of solo or shared daydreaming.

Historically, this has been a residence for noble families and a silent witness to centuries of Portuguese history. Its walls whisper tales of bygone eras, offering a deeply rooted sense of place.

Located in the heart of the lush Lima Valley, the manor is surrounded by verdant landscapes, rolling hills, and the meandering Lima River. This picturesque region is renowned for its unspoiled natural beauty, charming villages, and a rich tapestry of cultural traditions.

Our seven rooms sit along a curved cloister of the house’s old stable block. Bedrooms peer into the textured shade of the gardens, offering glimpses of a citrus grove. A spacious kitchen, dining and living spaces – complete with medieval fireplace – sit across three floors at one end of the building. Downstairs is an indoor heated pool, while a river perfect for swimming is just a two-minute drive away. The historic upper floors of the stunning Manor House proper, including the dashingly painted gallery filled with contemporary art, are accessible through a requested tour.

You can read the full story about this special place here.

This retreat is open to all levels of students. The practice will be tailored to the group and will get things moving for everyone. Mick’s ability to attend to everyone’s needs in the room is one-of-a-kind, so regardless of where you are at in your practice, you will leave feeling like you’ve learned more in this week than you would in a year of practice.

We will have morning and afternoon classes. Morning classes will be more dynamic and vigorous. Afternoons will be for gentle practice and exploration of the subtleties it offers. We might dive deeper into meditation, explore mindful walking, look into sense withdrawal, do some workshopping in a form of an asana lab and more.

Location

Quieter than the nearby Douro region, but as easily accessible from Porto, the Lima Valley offers unrestrained lushness.

There are few restaurants within walking distance of the property, and a fifteen-minute drive away, you’ll find Portugal’s oldest town, Ponte de Lima, a settlement centred on the old Roman bridge and tiled churches and houses surrounding town squares.

Vineyard visits can be arranged, including a trip to the quaint, family-run Casa da Senra some 10 minutes’ walk from our main gates. Further away, you’ll find the region’s blustery beaches near Viana do Castelo and – turning inland – the country’s only national park, Parque Nacional Peneda-Gerês.

Our Days

We believe in providing a balance of structured practice and personal freedom.

Beyond our two daily practices, the time is truly yours. Whether you choose to laze around the property, rest in the tranquil surroundings, immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the gardens, get active playing tennis or doing laps and summersaults in the pool, there will be time and space for it.

You might choose to venture out to discover the charm of the surrounding region, or partake in local tours and activities. We are happy to suggest experiences and assist with any arrangements you might need.

How to Get There

The nearest airport is Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport (OPO) in Porto, approximately 80 kilometres away. To get from the airport to our manor, you will need to rent a car or get a taxi. Sharing a rental car with other guests is recommended.

If you need help organising an airport transfer or finding a rental car partner, don’t hesitate to contact us.

Food

All meals will be vegetarian and vegan, crafted with fresh, local, and seasonal produce from our property and across the region. Our talented chef Lucy, from Ever Heard of Lola's, is dedicated to creating dishes that celebrate the natural flavours of the ingredients. Her dishes look like the still lifes of Dutch Old Masters: courgette flower-topped gnocchi in a buttery sauce; radicchio dolloped with a zany citrus compote and soft cheese; freshly baked cinnamon rolls for breakfast, alongside traditional cheeses, large grapefruits, poached eggs, and crisp, homemade granola with yoghurt.

Anything ripe and ready in the property’s biodynamic kitchen garden is for the taking. Israeli spinach, potatoes, pumpkins, raspberries, tomatoes kiwi and passion fruit are all being experimentally grown.

Lucy's baking skills will also be a highlight, with her renowned sourdough bread and an assortment of sweet treats.

Mick Barnes is an internationally known yoga teacher with 20 years of experience, former director of Jivamukti Yoga Sydney, and the founder and co-director of The Yoga Factory in Sydney.

He teaches from his experience of which he's had wild and many and from the knowledge of suffering and the way out.

Mick has an amusing but powerful character and certainly doesn’t pretend to be a “saint” modern-day yogi. Mick is honest, bold, old school but also fun and this mixture somehow empowers so many people. The way he approaches teaching is so different to what is known these days as “teaching of yoga”. Mick communicates traditional teachings of yoga, the way they should be taught: properly, gradually, step by step, with the address of individual body differences.

He emphasises the importance of regularity and discipline as without it yoga can’t be learned and the goal of yoga can’t be achieved. Mick does not sell promises or tell people to wear this, eat that, worship gurus, nor entice people to think that change and the whole yogic transformation will come about by just fitting in and adopting the behaviours. He asks the students to work hard, front up, to not be lazy, be accountable, but at the same time enjoy their lives.

For the last 20 years Mick has practiced continually. He has owned several successful yoga schools in Sydney, facilitates TYF’s teacher training that produces the best, most competent teachers in Sydney. He is also an in-demand facilitator at Ulpotha, Sri Lanka—one of the world’s best retreat facilities, and has been repeatedly invited to teach all around the world, from New York, to Europe, to all around Asia.

Mick is a rarity in contemporary yoga context and his experience and ability to communicate the teachings is worth travelling across the oceans for.
