FRIDAY NIGHT SPECIALS

Once a month, on a Friday, we offer something different for us all to experience as a community. These nights are a time for all kinds of special gatherings: live music yoga classes, yogic scripture study, asana technique labs, movie screenings and much more. Some in-school gatherings will be followed by out-of-school time spent locally, together, as a community.

It is a continuation of sharing yoga in different environments, building relationships between students and teachers and bringing us all together to ensure we keep on keeping on.

All things Ayurveda w/ Benjamin Haynes (The Medicine Man)

September 13 — 6pm

Ayurveda, the "science of life," originated in India over 5,000 years ago. This ancient system is based on the theory of five elements—Earth, Air, Fire, Water, and Space. Each person is born with a unique balance of these elements. Maintaining this balance is key to good health, but factors like diet, lifestyle, environment, work, and emotions can disrupt it, leading to disease.

In Ayurveda, the current state of these elements is called 'Vikriti'. Ayurveda aims to restore balance by aligning the current state with the individual's innate constitution.

Join us for an enlightening session with our special guest, Benjamin Haynes. Benjamin will introduce the basics of Ayurveda, help you understand the doshas and your personal constitution, and provide practical tips for achieving balance and well-being.

PAST EVENTS

Techniques Class w/ Mick, Paul, Tim, Julian

February 2

This was out first Friday Night Special. Mick, Tim, Paul and Julian taught a 90-minute workshop-style class.

We looked into the very basics and at extremely profound elements of the practice that if not overlooked or regarded as too obvious, make our practices what they should be - pure bliss.

This was a chaos of four great minds trying to work together followed by a gathering at The Lady Hampshire, where we shared some food, a beverage, experiences and laughs.

Live Music Yoga Class w/ Julian

February 23

live music yoga experimental music

While the room was being filled with sound, Julian guided us through 90 minutes of calming restorative practice.

Sound was by @totalholiday, whose debut LP Forever Island—a rhythmic ambient journey featuring soul-soothing melodies that capture the essence of relaxation and inner exploration—came out late last year.

The class was followed by some tea, sweets and sweet chats at the school.

Techniques w/ Tim

March 22

This was a workshop-style class, a laboratory, where we will played around with different ingredients and components that comprise the practice to form a better understanding of its inner workings.

This class was followed by a shared meal at @_derrels (contemporary Indian diner up the road).

Sense Withdrawal w / Mick

April 19

What does sense withdrawal mean? Can understanding our senses and the stimuli they constantly seek impact our overall peace and well-being? How often do we respond to the arousal of our senses and react without the slightest contemplation as to their nature?

In this special, Mick guided us through the experience of Pratyahara (sense withdrawal), the 5th and often overlooked limb of yoga.

A restorative class taught by Julian and accompanied by the beautiful sonic landscapes of Megan Alice Clune.

A treat for the body, a treat for the ears, a treat for the soul.

Megan is a composer, musician, and artist based in Sydney and has presented work around the world. She also lectures at the Conservatorium, Sydney Uni and UNSW.

Techniques w/ Tim

July 26 — 6pm

A workshop-style class, where there will be an opportunity to perfect the skill of finding alignment in postures and movement. However, this time we invite YOU to choose the content.

Students were encouraged to ask questions—anonymously if preferred—about all things 8-limb yoga. We then dissected it all with Tim during the class. So whether it is asana, the breath, bandha, yamas and niyamas that left students perplexed, wondering or pondering, this class wasa chance to ask questions and look for answers together.
